Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each structure is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. Cochin is an exquisite combination of traditional and the modern of intense nostalgia and high revelry. So be ready for a string of wonders. Giant Chinese fishing nets catch the glowing sun, sending you running for your camera. The Chinese fishing nets have become a very popular tourist attraction, their size and elegant construction is very photogenic and the slow rhythm of their operation is quite hypnotic. In addition, catches can be purchased individually and need be taken only a short distance to a street entrepreneur who will cook it. Local ferries take you put-putting to Willington Island and the renowned St.Francis Church where the mortal remains of Vasco da Gama were buried. As you travel along, you'll find that the British, Chinese, Portuguese and Arab influence are very evident. Vembanad Lake one of the Kerala Backwaters is situated at Kottayam is a vast network of rivers and canals which empty into the great expanse of water called the Vembanad Lake the largest lake in Kerala. An enchanting picnic spot and a fast developing backwater tourism destination, provides boating, fishing and sightseeing experiences that are truly exhilarating. This is an unbelievably beautiful paradise of mangrove forests, emerald green paddy fields and coconut groves interspersed with enchanting waterways and canals adorned with white lilies. |
