Most are what I would call semi-pros and live well, just trying to be one of tiny fraction that make the NFL. Same with big time college basketball. How did it get this way, i mean, where the heros and BMOCs simply do nothing to inspire scholarship and such. Not talking about those rare exceptions. |

One reason for that situation is that football brings in a lot of money to the big schools, and the alumni enjoy having teams that win games. The pro leagues encourage this system since it gives them a source of trained players. |

| Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Posts: 8 Rep Power: 0 | you asked, "Why do colleges have football teams?" My answer is money. Huge TV money. That's why you see teams like Ohio State play teams like Youngstown St, Bowling Green or Ohio U, because they want to keep that TV money and team payouts in OHIO. People think OSU is scared to play these teams on the road, not true! Playing at Ohio Stadium generates big big money for the Youngstown States of the world. 106,000 seat stadium. Youngstown and Ohio got somewhere around $800,000 each for playing at OSU. That's usually more than they receive for the whole season. |
