This is just a simple example but i was AMAZED from the responses that people gave when everyone had to share their answers with the class. It was shocking how some said they'd try to take the gun themselves or attempt to unload it themselves. These people being so uneducated about guns, whats to say they don't have their finger on the trigger and discharge a round themselves. I myself and a 16 year old male who has grown up wit guns and acquired a knowledgeable background of the guns. When i was 12 (the yougest age in CT a kid can get take a safey course) i took both the achery and firearms safety course. As well as my father and other people from the club i belong to have told me hints and pointers. Also getting experiance through shooting mostly every weekend at ranges and hunting for small game, birds and large such as deer. I believe i have a well range of such topics and think ALL kids should have the same. It could greatly decrease the death and injuries among childdren from firearms and the stupidity of people picking up an unfimiliar object such as a gun and getting hurt as a result. I see these things in the news everyday and i've decided it's time for somebody to start something to improve such conditions. I would like to pitch an idea to everyone as a starter what they think of a kid such as myself proposing to the board of education at my school about taking/ involving a course of gun safety at the high-school level. Optional as a trial then possibly down the road, make it a mandatory quaterly course. I know how hard it is to pursue the opinions of others. Especially if one of the board members has a family encounter with a death due to mishandleing of weapons. It could be a big eye-opener to teens who may very well be involved in seeing such objects in daily life. Along with this the course will involve... SAFETY, fimiliaration with different types of guns, the difference between shotguns, rifles, and pistols, and the different bullet types. (slugs, spreadshots) and the composition of each to make it fire. as well as a breakdown of weapons. (components) Possibly about wildlife management and why hunting is a neccessity to control the numbers in populations. It will be very hard because i know a lot of people hear such events in news and have a mindset about firearms but if they would too sit in a hunters safety course i believe they can learn a lot. PLEASEEEE! Let me know what y'all think about this and if i get enough of positive attitude i would highly consiter proposing it to the board, who knows; one day it could become nation wide. |

A mandatory firearm safety and awareness program could go a long ways in preventing future tragedies. The more children know about how to handle a firearm safely the less likely they are to have an accident with it and the more likely they are to respect the tool and not abuse it. It would be nice to see if you could get your local law enforcement involved in the program as well. Perhaps an officer that is certified in firearm training would be the ideal candidate to lead it. |
