I like smart, loving, and easily trained dogs. I hear that both of these dogs have many of the same features. Here is a little about myself: I live in a house with One 10 year old One 14 year old One 16 year old One Ferret (will the dog herd her if they are intruduced as a pup?) And Two Adults. So as you can see they need to get along with children. We have 4 chickens and a medium sized yard. Since I live in the mountains of Japan there are A LOT of rice fields (like corn fields) around here to run and train in. So there is PLENTY of wilderness, trees, hiking, etc. Can a border collie live outside? Do they have a coat that will withstand temp. outside? It does not get too hot or cold around here. but I am just curious. Can a ACD (australian cattle dog) live outside? Do they have a coat that will withstand temp. outside? It does not get too hot or cold around here. but I am just curious. Thanks to all the BC and ACD owners out there who helped me out. |

We get a companion to be a family member, to share our lives and if our lives are indoors than those dogs should be indoors when we are. Both breeds are going to have a strong prey drive and so will need to be supervised around the poultry until they can be taught that chasing and eating chickens is unacceptable. Even then I wouldn't let them have free access to them. Dogs that are raised with children are better with kids than those who are not socialized with kids from the time they are pups. Both of these breeds tend to chase and nip and so can scare very young children, but yours are old enough to be able to teach the dog when that sort of play is unacceptable. The Border Collies do come in both a smooth and rough coat, so if a longer coat and grooming isn't your cup of tea, a smooth coat would be a better choice. The ACD is also has a very easy to maintain coat. Both breeds do need training and something to keep them busy or they can get into all sorts of trouble so be sure you are ready to dedicate a few hours a day to exercise and training. They are both wonderful dogs and I don't think you would go wrong with either one. |
