Default Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

Hey guys and gals,
I am trying to learn more about cars. And lets just say, I know next to nothing. I have learned a bit by surfing the web, but there is still a ton of information I would like to learn. Anyway, any information you could give me on the cars and what not would be awesome. and remember, I know next to nothing, so you may have to explain what torque and so forth means before you use it. Thanks a ton! You guys are the best!

Tell me a bit about this cars? What is unique about them and what enables me to tell them apart from other cars? Inside and outside.

Nissian R34 Skyline
McLaren
Saleen
Toyota Supra
Honda NSX
Nissian 350Z and 300zx
Audi TT
Viper
Mazda rx 7 and 8
Stingray
Koenigsegg CCX
(if you cant or dont want to do all of them thats fine)

What is torque?
What is GT?
What is turbo? (I know sort of, but how does it work?)
What is Nitrus?
What is supercharge?
What is a roll cage?

Basically anything you wanna tell me about cars would be great. Websites, pictures of you own car, or cars you only dream of would be awesome! thanks!
Haha. thanks all you contributors! In depth explanations are fine. And I do know, torque is not peeling out. lol
anyway, I will look those cars up. I know how the basic engine works, intake of fuel and air through the camshaft into the engine where it is compressed then explodes and eventually causing the crankshaft to create a rotary motion that spins your tires. I know what carbon fiber is. I know the difference between a lambo mercialogo and gallardo. and how both are ridiculously expensive and dangerous. I know a good friend of mine loves his 300zx but wants a r34 skyline. I know people have a strange facination for supras and nsx's. I know the SSC Ultimate Aero is the fastest car in the world. I know I love riding in fast cars, and the feeling of going over 140 mph. Anything else you feel like sharing would be great. in depth or no. thanks guys

Default Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

Most those cars are all japanese cars ^^^ except a few.. supras the best tho

torque measures how hard something is rotated. For example, imagine a wrench or spanner trying to twist a nut or bolt. The amount of twist (torque) depends on how long the wrench is, how hard you push on it, and how well you are pushing it in the correct direction

GT means gran turismo usually badged on sport model cars like a mustang to a mustang
GT means the other one usually has more power under the hood, the more sporty one.

turbo and superchargers are both the same on what they do, the only way you get more
power out of a car is by adding more air and or fuel to the combustion. turbos and supers
and more air, and when more air is added, more fuel has to be added, more power.
turbos suck in air when the exhaust gases spin the turbine, the blades are inverted
and suck air in, past it thru the intercooler where the compressed air is now cooled,
cooler air has more density, more power.. supercharger does the same sucks air
in, works of the crankshaft belt, and sucks air in also, their bascially the same.

Nitrious is just a chemical pushed into the combustion with fuel the air fuel to give more
bang, more power when u need it.. the big thing your guna learn in tuning engines
is that its all about air and fuel mixture, A/F ratio.

Default Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

The cars are far to extensive to really answer but ill take a crack at the others.

Torque in a nut shell is what gets you moving. Its pulling power. Trucks that haul typically want torque.

GT means Gran Turismo it's a race thing they use to brand on cars.

A turbo is a turbine that attaches to the engine and through the building exhaust it forces more fuel and air into the engine. This called boost. The more boost the turbo adds the more power the engine receives making a car faster.

Nitros is basically feeding your engine crack. Its super combustible gas going to your engine giving your car a temporary boost of speed.

A supercharger does the same job as a turbo but instead of feeding off exhaust its built into the engine so there is no winding up waiting for boost to build. Generally supercharges will be used on drag cars when you need the power on the line.

A roll cage is a safety device if you roll the car the top won't cave in on you.

How stuff works has a bunch of articles that can explain stuff pretty well.
Once you learn most of the nuts and bolts of cars.
What makes the cars you listed special will be obvious.

Default Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

1) torque - is peeling out
2) GT - is top grade class
3) turbo - gives you horsepower (just overall power)
4) Nitrous - is a gas used in racing only
5) supercharge - gives you horsepower
6) roll cage - is bars inside the car to protect the driver if in an accident

you guys are going too deep she is wanting simple answers:
torque is the force of contact at the tires on a car
the torque you are giving is the torque on a nut
she does not want to be a mechanic she wants to know cars

Default Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

really i would just look up each of those cars, and other questions on Wikipedia. That should tell you just about everything you need to know.

Although if you want some more in-depth scientific knowledge about the things like turbo/superchargers, i would go to howstuffworks.com

Default Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

-Nissan R34 Skyline is now called the Nissan GTR. This car is very good if you want really fast and tight cornering. The car does this by have a ugly aerodynamic body in which each crease and lines are made so that it cuts the wind sharply and has better cornering. The reason why this car is so popular is because its fast and handles great and also its alot less cheaper than other cars it competes with.

-McLaren- Is a British based company that is known for having the former fastest production car in the world, The McLaren F1. First car to be designed after a Formula 1 car with only one front seat which was in the middle and for using paddle shifters on the back of the steeling wheels. Had a top speed of 240 and 0-60 in 3 seconds. It was made about 12 years ago and yet still to this day is the one of the fastest cars in the world ranks in top 10, still looks pretty sexy and was the a naturely aspired engine. it was also one the first cars to have its body made out of carbon fiber( a fabric that is harder and stronger than steel and half the weight of steel when baked at high temps.

-Saleen is a american tuner for cars meaning it doesn't make car but it has made some. What tuners do is take already made cars and tunes to to be fast more powerful and handle better. the best names in the industry are AMG, Barbus, AC Schnitzer, Techart, Hamann, Gemballa and Cargraphic. Saleens most popular tune was the ford gt

The Nissan 350Z and 370Z are probably the most popular street racing cars. Their incredibly cheap for what you get from them. porsche boxters has a hard time beating them and evn keeping up with them. The car is a two seater and competes mainly with Mercedes E-Class, BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS, Acura TL, and Infinti( Nissan makes infinti so idk about that) Thier most known for being very easy and effective to tune theres allot of things you can do with and the best part is it can do on of the craziest drifts ever

Viper- one of the most fastest and successful american super cars. its petty fast with 0-60 under 4 secs and top speed of 202 but is also very dangerous and unfrgivng if you make a mistake in it but its fun to drive and its a great trill. the viper still like most american cars is very cheaply made you can break the back of the boot wth a punch but who needs a boot when you 600 horse under the hood

Default Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

What is torque? Torque is essentially pulling power and/or acceleration off the line. The more torque you have, generally the better acceleration you have and the more weight you can carry/tow before the car starts to struggle. In imperial measurements, it's measured in pound-feet (lb-ft), and Newton metres (Nm) in metric.

What is GT? GT stands for Gran Turismo (translates from Italian to Grand Touring). These are top level sports luxury cars which usually have four seats and a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration (where the engine is placed over the front wheels, and sends power to the rear wheels). These are things like Ferraris, Aston Martins, the Nissan Skyline GT-R, and Porsches.

What is a turbocharger? A turbocharger (Sometimes referred to as a snail due to the general shape of a turbo) is a device that increases the power of an engine by forcing more air into the engine, to sum it up briefly. Basically exhaust gases from the engine turn a fan (compressor) which draws in air and sends it into the intake manifold (which sends a mixture of fuel and air into the cylinders), resulting in more air being sent into the cylinders than a non-turbocharged car.

What is Nitrous? Nitrous Oxide (referred to by car fans as NOS, but more commonly known as the laughing gas used by dentists) is a chemical compound that forces more oxygen into the engine so it can burn more fuel and air. It acts as a temporary means of gaining a lot of power, on most systems you can see a temporary increase of 100 horsepower to the engine.

What is a supercharger? A supercharger is simply another way of doing a turbochargers job. Superchargers are driven by the engine as opposed to the turbocharger which uses exhaust gases emitted by the engine, but they increase power to the engine in a similar manner, ie. by sending more air into the cylinders.

What is a roll cage? A roll cage is a set of metal supports that are bolted into the interior of a car to increase rigidity/stiffness. They're mainly designed for racing cars to improve safety in the event of a rollover, but they also reduce body-roll and in general stiffen the car up so it can corner better and with more precision.

I will explain a few of the cars and why they are famous as well:

Nissan Skyline (R34 generation): The R34 Skyline is one of the most famous incarnations of the Skyline badge. It was developed in 1998-2002 and is probably most famous as a boy-racer's wet dream. Incredibly quick for what it had, but relatively cheap as well. However, they are very rare in America as they were not officially sold there and imports have stopped. They command quite a price tag now.

McLaren F1: Made in 1994, this was famous for being the fastest production car in the world, which was an award it held until 2005 when the Koenigsegg CCR beat it by a mere 1km/h.

Saleen: Saleen is an American tuning and supercar company that is most famous for its work on the Ford Mustangs and its Saleen S7 Twin Turbo supercar.

Toyota Supra: The Supra was a very legendary Japanese sports car. The JZA80, the last generation of it, is the most famous and regarded as one of the best Japanese sports cars in history.

Honda NSX: Commonly referred to as the Japanese Ferrari, this is widely regarded as one of Japan's only real supercars. Like the Skyline, it was cheap but very quick for its specifications, and not to mention it wasn't a bad looker either.

Nissan 300ZX, 350Z: The 300ZX was built in two generations and predominantly as a luxury car which is what the X in its name designated. This trend was started by the 300ZX's predecessor, the 280ZX. The 300ZX had two major trim levels: the Fairlady Z and the 2+2. The Fairlady Z was a 2-seater coupe whereas the 2+2 had two very small seats in the back row for some added practicality. Both versions had the option of non-turbo, single-turbo on the first generation (Z31), and twin-turbo on the second generation (Z32). The 350Z was the successor to the 300ZX and focussed more on sportiness rather than luxury. It had a larger motor than the 300ZX (although the twin-turbo versions of the 300ZX were actually faster), completely brand new styling and two major trims: Track and Touring.

Audi TT: The TT is a 2-door 2-seat coupe that was designed primarily as a sports-luxury car.

Dodge Viper: The Dodge Viper was first developed as a roadster in the late 80's where it became commonly known as the Boulevard Dragster, mainly because it couldn't really take corners that well but had a huge amount of power on tap which gave it incredible straight-line performance. Now though the Viper SRT10 is an accomplished sports car that actually has the dynamic ability to back up that monstrous 8.4L V10 engine.

Mazda RX-7 and RX-8: These are mainly only unique because of their engines, which were Wankel rotaries, which did not use pistons like a normal car would; instead they used rotors, which got them the name rotaries.

Stingray: A trim level for the early generation Chevrolet Corvettes. The two most famous Stingrays are the C2 (1963-67) and the C3 (1969-78).

Koenigsegg CCX: A Swedish-built hypercar capable of a top speed of about 250mph. The CCX was the successor to the CCR which was the first car to finally knock the McLaren F1 off of its fastest production car perch.

And here's a few of my own little things thrown in:

My own car:

I have a 1988 Nissan Skyline GXE with a few sound system trinkets thrown in. I'm going to throw some modifications on it soon but for now otherwise it's stock as a rock, with 271,000kms/168,000miles on the clock, and a 3.0L inline-6 putting out about 155hp (pretty weak now but it was good back in '88).

My current reasonably priced dream car is a 2004-05 Subaru Impreza WRX, much like the picture below, which was my mum's old example of this model car. All-wheel-drive, a 2.0L turbocharged flat-4 engine with a computer and exhaust system upgrade as well as new springs and a new set of wheels.

Default Questions for all the Car Gurus!!!!?

Looking through the answers, it seems that everyone is a little mistaken on the meaning of GT. It does mean Grand Touring, but it isn't for top of the line rear wheel drive cars like Ferraris. It actually doesn't mean much of anything, other than to distinguish the GT car from the base car. GT is usually an upmarket trim, but it doesn't have to be a supercar. Pontiac's mid to high level cars are GT level, and many of them have been front wheel drive. Grand Am, Grand Prix, G6, G5, and others.
