how long will an itouch second generation's battery last until it is useless

Depends on how many times you recharge it. Probably about 2 years. You can bring it to an Apple store when it needs to be replaced and they will put a new one in for you.

person above me basically said it all, side note: if your iPod is out of warranty and you take it to get a battery replaced it'll cost you $79
