If I were you, I would just brown the chicken on the stovetop in your pot. Then once it is no longer pink in the middle, cover it with your BBQ sauce. Usually when I make chicken this way though, I let it sit in BBQ sauce throughout the day to get a better flavor.

If you have flour then you could coat the chicken with flour, and put butter on the bottom of your pot. Then you could brown your chicken on both sides, remove, and in a separate dish, pour barbecue sauce over your chicken while it is still hot.
